Points Matter More
All those near-fatal points in those close matches? They will play a bigger role in your rating. You have had those matches. Epic battles of steel and nerve that you perhaps squeaked past by the slimmest of margins, winning maybe 11-9 after an unbelievable match. The revised system will reward that effort. Your rating will rise more than if you had won 11-0 against a bounder with no skills who simply can’t get it past the net.
Recent Play Matters Most
Players’ DUPR numbers focus only on their most recent matches which is far more valuable information than showing older, maybe rusty, performances from last season. Until you’re winning each Division you’re playing in, you don’t want your performance numbers to be dragged down by effort and play from the past.
Every Match Counts:
A first-time player on the court can relax! Any match you play will count towards your DUPR score, which means you’ll be matched more appropriately, even when your game improves. If you’re just learning the game and you get partnered up with someone who has been playing a while, you’ll still have a match that gets factored into your rating, and it will help DUPR find better opponents for you as your game improves.

Understanding the skill levels that DUPR uses helps you figure out where you are beginning your pickleball journey. Moreover, proficient players should have a keen sense of court dimensions, strategically using the length of the court to their advantage, and adeptly trapping their opponents in medium-length rallies. They should also be able to vary the pace of their dinks, possess the finesse to keep the ball in the kitchen if they choose, and demonstrate the agility to block and return fast volleys. You can picture them in the courtroom of pickleball, poised and ready with a good answer to most questions.
4.0: Advanced
You are taking it to the next level! Here, you can pretty much check off everything mentioned above. You hit most overheads, dominate dink rallies, and trained reflexes allow you to go from soft to power with a split-second catch-and-fire action. You also mastered awareness of doubles partner positioning – setting players up on the “pickleball chessboard”. You have become a pickleball story writer, finding winning narratives at your feet.
4.5: Mastery
Impressive! Nearly perfected. Players at this level have joined the select ranks of poachers. Their strong balance and wide repertoire encompass lobbing, footwork, and mastery of dinking. For example, on the hard court, the receiver will funnel the shot to the left corner after the server puts the ball on the right service fence. The poacher will then run down the ball from the sideline for a winning tactical dink. Think pickleball roses, appointed with princes and princesses of the game.
5.0+ Elite
These are the best of the best, the Kyle Yates of the pickleball world. 5.0+: They have mastered every aspect of pickleball play, serve, dink, last-ditch smash, patience in 27 volley rallies.
